Beans Mallum is a cherished Sri Lankan dish, known as "Bonchi Mallum,", "බෝංචි මැල්ලුම, බෝංචි මැල්ලුම්" that celebrates the simplicity and vibrancy of the country's cuisine. It combines finely chopped green beans with fragrant coconut, creating a harmonious blend of flavors and textures. Cooked with mustard seeds and turmeric, it offers earthy and aromatic notes. Grated coconut adds creaminess and natural sweetness. This dish is not only a treat for the palate but also a nutritional powerhouse, rich in vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber from beans, making it a wholesome complement to a traditional Sri Lankan meal, whether as a side dish or a standalone delight.

Ingredients
  • 250 grams fresh green beans, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup grated coconut
  • 1 1/2 Large onion, finely chopped
  • 5 Green chilies, finely chopped (Adjust to your spice preference)
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • curry leaves
  • 2 Garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 5 tablespoons Oil
Instructions
  1. Prepare the ingredients.
  2. Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a pan on medium-high heat. Add chopped beans, salt, and turmeric powder. sauté them for 5 minutes.
  3. Then, set them aside on a plate or a bowl.
  4. In the same pan, add the rest 2 tbsp of oil, mustard seeds, curry leaves, and chopped garlic. Let them sizzle.
  5. Add chopped onions and green chilies, and cook until they turn soft and translucent.
  6. After that, mix everything well.
  7. Next, put the sautéed beans back into the pan and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
  8. Mix everything well and check the salt level. Add a little more if needed.
    Reduce the heat and let the beans cook for about a minute, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  9. Once the beans are tender but still slightly firm, add grated coconut. Stir it in.
    Taste the dish and adjust the salt and spiciness to your liking. You can add more green chilies for extra heat.
  10. Cook for an additional 2 minutes to blend the flavors together.
  11. Remove from heat and serve your tasty Beans Mallum as a side dish, preferably with rice and other Sri Lankan dishes. Enjoy your homemade Sri Lankan Beans Mallum!
